  1. Become a blood donor -

This was my new year’s resolution 2 years ago – one that I managed to stick to.

The next sessions at Warsash Victory Hall are 21 Jan or 4 Feb. Session times 1.30-3.25 or 4.30 – 7.15. I’d recommend booking an appointment as you get through a bit more quickly when it’s busy.

  2. Choose to have one meat-free day a week in your home -

Try this delicious recipe … butternut squash risotto (serves 4).
Fry 1 onion in 3 tbsp olive oil for 2 mins, add 1tsp ground cumin and 1tsp ground coriander. Add 300g risotto rice and stir round. Add 1 litre veg stock one ladle at a time – stir continuously. Add 350g butternut squash – peeled and cubed (option – steam lightly first, helps with cooking)and 1 medium courgette – diced – cook for 5 mins. Then add 125g frozen peas. Stir and continue cooking for 5 mins until all liquid has been absorbed.

Season to taste. Option – serve with some grated paremsan on top.

  3. Give something (or many things!) away – and de-clutter your life -

I’ve signed up to this on behalf of my children, who cleared out their games and toys cupboard and donated what they no longer wanted to their school – they had requested toys for wet playtimes.

  4. Recycle your stuff -

I’ve been collecting our spent batteries to take to the recycling centre – we seem to get through more than I realised. Have just invested in a Wii-remote charging station as battery use was shocking! Doesn’t last as long as ordinary batteries, but only takes a couple of hours to recharge the unit.

  5. Compost your leftovers -

Any ideas on how to get rid of those horrible fruit fly things that seem to love living in my compost bin and flying into my mouth when I take the lid off – yuk!

  6. Make your own bread -

I love making bread – it’s a bit of a family obsession. Obviously I cheat a bit and use a bread machine, but it’s still satisfying to slice a homemade loaf! As I type this I am waiting for my Hot Cross Bun dough to rise … well it is Good Friday!

  7. Watch An Inconvenient Truth in 2009 -

We watched this in our Church Alive home group last year and it kick-started some really good discussions. It’s easy to watch, doesn’t gloss over the facts, but end with a message of hope. Really good if you are wondering what to use as a house group resource.

  8. Start banking ethically -

Smile is the online bank for the Co-operative and has been excellent. We have also got a Co-operative bank issued credit card which donates to Christian Aid – I’m sure someone can tell my why it shouldn’t, but it does soothe my conscience when I am indulging in some retail therapy …

I’m happy to be a part of generous and hope to be able to encourage as many people as possible from St Mary’s Hook with Warsash to sign up! I love the idea of finding out who else is committing to actions and get some ideas of how to make small changes that might even lead to bigger changes … …
